A protocol for artists & patrons

SoulStakes

Stake. Own. Use. Love.

The SoulStakes workflow: create, train, generate, mint, buy, lock, authorize, issue
§ 1

The Whole Idea, in One Minute

A new model for licensing any art, physical or virtual, built on three ideas:

01
Artist Token

The artist’s own currency — used for licensing, funding special projects, and growth. Once popular, the artist can also trade the token.

02
License NFT

Lock the artist’s token to license a work — lock to license, unlock to burn license.

03
AI Apprentice Agent · Optional

Trained on an artist’s style, generates licensed artworks at scale, which the artist can then monetize.

Today, art pays you once — when it sells. SoulStakes makes your art pay you again and again, for as long as people love it.

Founder’s Remarks

Read the letter

It is my life’s mission to create sustainable income for artists. I have spent the past five years trying, and I have made a significant personal investment in this mission.

Many artists don’t understand that startups are not guaranteed to succeed — in fact, most of them fail.

Artists who don’t understand startups hate me.

Artists who understand that I am trying to find a viable approach — some of them love me.

In my previous attempts I funded the initial build and then looked for partners and investors. That didn’t work. This time I will find investors and partners first — then build the SoulStakes platform.

Third time is a charm.

Here comes § SoulStakes.

Maya's Story
This is Maya. People love her work.
But a painting pays only once — when it sells.
!
Meanwhile, machines copy her style. Nobody asked her.
§
On SoulStakes, Maya mints her own token — every artist has their own. Any amount, at her price.
$ $ $
Patrons and fans buy her tokens. Every sale is income for Maya.
Leo locks his tokens and a license switches on: Maya's art, on his wall. Unlock, and it's off — he keeps his tokens.
§
A hotel buys and locks many more. Her art fills the lobby.
“A RAINY HARBOR”§
Maya teaches her Apprentice Agent her unique style — from the works she chooses, and it takes orders only from her.
SOMETHING NEW§§§
A brand licenses a brand-new drawing in her style. Fresh tokens are minted for the license — and that mint pays Maya, with a certificate to prove it all.
Maya keeps painting — without the pressure of producing new work on a schedule. That's SoulStakes.
§ 2

The Problem

Paid once

A work sells, you are paid, and that is the end of it.

Always producing

No new work, no income. The treadmill never stops.

Fans can’t help much

People who love your work can buy it or follow you. That’s about it.

AI takes without asking

Machines copy your style at scale — no consent, no credit, no pay.

A strong body of work should support you for years — without you becoming a production mill.

The problem
§ 3

The Solution

SoulStakes is for visual artists of every kind — painters, illustrators, photographers, printmakers, digital artists. If you make images, this is built for you. And it doesn’t stop at images: music, film, and writing are the natural next steps, one artform at a time.

You get your own token

Each artist has their own token. Yours carries your name, and you mint as many as you choose.

Fans lock tokens

Locking your tokens switches on a right you offer — like displaying your art.

You set the rules

Which rights exist, what they cost, what is never allowed.

You get paid

Every time someone buys your tokens — the one and only way money reaches you.

AI, only if you say yes

Your Apprentice Agent — an AI that learns your style the way an apprentice learns from a master. When its new work is licensed, your tokens get locked — tokens someone first buys from you. Saying no is always allowed.

Everything is provable

Every drawing carries a certificate anyone can check.

3.1Five problems SoulStakes solves

1
No reliable way to commission work

Buy some of the artist’s tokens so they are paid up front. When the work is done, buy more and stake them for a license to the commissioned piece.

2
No way to help fund an exhibition

A group of supporters buys tokens to fund an artist’s exhibition — and every supporter keeps their stake in the artist.

3
AI art has no legitimacy

Your Apprentice Agent was trained by you, and you authorize its work. That legitimacy opens a new market — even bulk orders.

4
Community requires social media

Not anymore. Your token is the vector: holding it is belonging. No algorithm in between.

5
No way to pay yourself

If your token trades with liquidity on an open exchange, you can meet a short-term cash shortage by minting and selling your own tokens.

§ 4

How We Make Money

Whenever a patron buys your tokens, we add a 3% markup to the amount the patron pays — exactly how sales tax works. That is our whole business model. SoulStakes is artist-friendly: all basic services are feature-rich and free for artists. Premium services are always optional — and when we offer them, we intend to make them very affordable.

AI agents can get expensive. If you opt in to the Apprentice Agent, we pass those costs on to you.

§ 5

Meet Your Apprentice Agent

Your Apprentice Agent is an AI that studies under you the way an apprentice once studied under a master — learning your line, your color, your light, from only the works you choose. Someone types a prompt, and it answers with a drawing that could only have come from your hand.

You decide what it learns from and what it may never draw. You can pause it or retire it whenever you want. Licensing one of its drawings locks tokens — tokens bought from you first. And it is entirely optional — say no, and everything else still works. And “drawing” is just shorthand: the Apprentice Agent works in your medium — painted, illustrated, or photographed.

Optional: how the teaching works
How the teaching actually works

Finished images alone can’t capture how you draw — so your Apprentice Agent learns from your process, not just your results. Time-lapse recordings from tools like Procreate show it your stroke order, your pressure, your hesitations and corrections — the living gesture behind the finished piece. For photographers the same holds: RAW files with their full edit history, develop settings, the frames you kept and the frames you culled — the decisions behind the final image. Your own words matter too: short notes on why a color was chosen or what a mark means teach it things pixels never could.

Then you grade its homework. With every round of your feedback — “more of this, never that” — it gets closer. The honest part: the last few percent, the je ne sais quoi, is genuinely hard, and some of it is open research. That is exactly why nothing goes live until you say the work could have been yours.

5.1Nothing happens without your yes

Joining SoulStakes does not mean saying yes to AI. Every capability needs its own permission — and some can stay refused forever. The Apprentice Agent learns your style, never your works: no copying your pieces, your characters, or your signature, and every drawing is automatically checked against your existing work.

Your Apprentice Agent answers to you alone — hardwired to take instructions only from you, impossible to borrow, steal, or misuse. And when you are gone, it retires with you: no artist, no Apprentice Agent. Your body of work stays exactly as you left it.

Change your prices, pause your Apprentice Agent, retire it forever, or leave — all yours to decide. The one thing that stays fair: rights people validly paid for wind down honestly instead of vanishing overnight.

Token holders do not control your creative decisions. Ever.

Control

You also choose what your art and your Apprentice Agent may never touch:

Behind it all: real legal agreements, identity checks where the law expects them, and your data guarded. Anyone can verify that a right is real — your prices and private terms stay private.

§ 7

The Honest Part

A project that’s trusted with your life’s work should name its risks and commitments.

To start off, this is an experiment. We have no idea if it will work. The only thing we can promise is that we will work hard. But hard work alone does not guarantee success — as I have learned from prior ventures. Sometimes you do everything right, and the project still fails. Nothing to be done about it. That’s how startups work. And one more plain truth: without outside investment, this project cannot escape gravity.

Anyway — here are the risks, spelled out:

Regulation

Different countries may treat artist tokens differently.

Speculation

Trading could drown out real use; the product must stay use-first.

Thin artist revenue

Careless design could reward holders more than artists.

Apprentice Agent quality

A weak Apprentice Agent embarrasses its artist; you approve it, and you can kill it.

Copying

Drawings too close to real works, or attackers milking a model — checks and limits push back.

Platform capture

Open-source code (MIT), open standards, and portable records keep SoulStakes from becoming the next middleman.

Not an NFT marketplace. Not fractional ownership. Not an image generator. What’s being exchanged is a continuing, artist-authorized relationship.

Why it's different
§ 8

The Road Ahead

We start small and real: a handful of verified artists, display rights, prints, and the first three to five Apprentice Agents built hand-in-hand with the artists who want them. Artists never pay big costs up front — SoulStakes earns from the small 3% markup patrons pay when buying tokens. Nothing to mint. We work at the income layer, not at the output layer. We are focused on your income from art licensing. We’ll leave it to others to make your art discoverable and to figure out where and how it can be displayed.

We begin with visual art in all its forms — painting, illustration, photography, printmaking. Music, film, and writing follow the same logic, and they are exactly where SoulStakes goes next.

SoulStakes will be built in the open — free and open source under the liberal MIT license. Public code, visible progress, standards anyone can adopt.

Open source

The old art market organizes value around objects. SoulStakes organizes value around access — access you define, control, and get paid for.

Patrons hold stakes.
Artists define the rights.
